Psilocybin Mushrooms
Psilocybin mushrooms have been used since ancient times in shamanic practices throughout Mesoamerica — among the Maya, Mixtec, and Zapotec peoples. They called them “Teonanácatl” — “Flesh of the Gods.”
Ceremonies were accompanied by chanting, breathwork, cleansing rituals, and always — deep reverence for the Spirit of the plant.
The main psychoactive compounds in mushrooms are psilocybin and its active form psilocin. Both substances affect the brain’s serotonin receptors, causing changes in perception, thought patterns, emotions, and the sense of time.
Mushrooms also contain norbaeocystin and baeocystin — alkaloids that may enhance or modulate the overall effect.
There is a wide variety of Psilocybe cubensis and natalensis subspecies, but for my retreats, I traditionally use the strain known as Golden Teacher, one of the most famous.
Its name comes from its distinct appearance — a golden-amber cap — and its ability to provide deep, “teaching” experiences.
This strain emerged in the 1980s and quickly became a classic among psychonauts and facilitators for its versatility and clarity of process.
Golden Teacher is known for its smooth onset and profoundly wise, guiding nature.
At the retreat
We work with a moderate therapeutic dose of 3 grams, which is enough for a full journey with vivid visuals and deep immersion. If needed, the dosage can be adjusted from 2 to 4 grams.
The effects begin within 15–20 minutes and last around 5–6 hours, depending on the individual, their mindset, and the environment.
